I heard him say this on a recent Oprah show and the idea just blew me away. It made me realize that there are times every single day when, if I stop to think about it, I feel like I’m in heaven too. For instance, like when I’m drinking that first cup of coffee and reading the newspaper every morning. Turns out, it doesn’t take much.

When I get to obsessing about something that I can do nothing about, I do simple math problems in my head. This changes my focus from the right side of the brain (the feeling, intuitive side) to the left side of the brain (the detail-oriented, logic side). The result is usually peace and a good night’s sleep. Give it a try and see if this works for you when thinking about someone or something is keeping you up nights.

The older I get, the more I realize how wrong my perceptions were about people and events in my past. For instance, when I was young, I thought we were the poorest of the poor in our small town and that everyone was looking down on us. I discovered recently, thanks to my brother who went back for a visit, that most of the people that lived there were just as poor as we were. Had I known then what I know now, I wouldn’t have been so quick to judge and would have made more of an effort to tame my errant ego. What I know now is that you can’t really see inside someone else’s heart.

Instead of saying, “I’ve never done that,” say, “I’ll learn how.” If you’re not doing as well as you would like, chances are there’s something you don’t know and still need to learn. Read books, take classes, ask people who do know or hire people who can teach you. The information is out there somewhere. You just need to find it.
Funny bumper sticker: “Oh no! Not another learning opportunity.”
